Schuchardt, B., Scholle, J., Schulze, S., Bildstein, T.. Vergleichende Bewertung der ökologischen Situation der inneren Ästuare von Eider, Elbe, Weser und Ems: Was hat sich nach 20 Jahren verändert?. In: Gönnert, G., Pflüger, B., Bremer, J.-A. (eds.). Von der Geoarchäologie über die Küstendynamik zum Küstenzonenmanagement. Coastline Reports (9), pp. 15-26. EUCC - The Coastal Union, Leiden, 2007.

Zusammenfassung:

The current ecological situation of the inner estuaries of Eider, Elbe, Weser and Ems is described using the following indicators: tidal range, forland area, oxygen concentration in the water column and heavy metal concentration in sediments. The current situation is compared with the situation 20 years ago and with a historical reference sitution. All estuaries are still subject to heavy stress as they were already 20 years ago. However, comparing the current situation with the situation 20 years ago different developments became evident. On the one hand, improvements can be noted in the heavy metal burden and the oxygen content in Weser and Elbe. On the other hand, there is a dramatic deterioation of the oxygen situation in the inner Ems estuary. An increase in the tidal range and destruction of foreland still takes place in the estuaries, but on a limited scale. Future prospects also appear to be contradictory; integrated management plans should be formulated.
