Zusammenfassung:

Tourism in the Odra Estuary Region – Problems and Ways to Solve Them. The Baltic Sea islands, Usedom and Wolin, are classic tourist destinations. The political circumstances of the 20th century have meant that these islands have developed heterogeneously and today, in the early 21st century, they face new socio-economic and demographic challenges. In terms of both the natural potential and the tourist accoutrement, there are significant differences between the attractive shorelines and the rural, largely undeveloped hinterlands. This situation calls for new concepts. A key to solving some of the problems characteristic for the region, such as unemployment and out-migration, might be nature tourism, developed and based upon the large protected natural areas, and strengthened regionally with tourism marketing. Nature tourism would focus on nature-oriented activities, the marketing of regional products and dissemination of environmental information. A possible starting point could be, for instance, bicycle tourism along existing cycling paths, which could be connected to tourism associated with the local ferry lines. Several specialist groups could be set up at key points around the Szczecin/Odra Lagoon to further co-ordinate these activities.
