Zusammenfassung: In the case of accidents at sea, actions to combat pollutants must be well-coordinated in order to be most effective. Depending on the extent of maritime emergencies it may become necessary to prioritise the protection or clean-up of certain areas of shore and sea over others. This prioritisation must be based on reliable data. Biological sensitivity as one important criterion for prioritisation is derived from those data; therefore, sensitivity mapping of the German Baltic Sea area was instituted by the five coastal German federal states and the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing. The ARCADIS Consult Company was assigned the task of project manager. The project work was divided into several steps: examination of data, data collection, data preparation, development of an evaluation model, evaluation of the collected data and integration into the VPS software system, an electronic contingency planning system..To account for different prevailing conditions, a distinction was made between the on-shore and off-shore environments. The criteria of evaluation were benthic invertebrates, macro-algae, aquatic and coastal birds, protected spawning grounds for fish and type of coast. The result of the project was the classification of the German Baltic Sea area into 4 categories of sensitivity: extremely sensitiv, highly sensitive, moderately sensitiv and slightly sensitive.
