GLOMAR Introductory Course on
“Socio-Economic and Institutional Dimensions of Global Change in the Marine Realm”

This basic course of 5 days is part of the joint research training for PhD students from natural and social sciences. The course will touch on human demands and impact on marine resources, on repercussions of the seas on human life, on economics of the exploitation of marine resources, on sociological aspects of interactions of societies and the sea, and on the legal framework of utilising marine resources.
The course will focus on those aspects of global change in the marine realm that are prominently addressed in the research of the GLOMAR Ph.D. students. It will introduce into
core aspects of the societal dimensions of global change in the marine realm. The programme will at the same time provide an overview of the most relevant concepts and
approaches of the participating social science disciplines. The following subjects will thus be approached by history, legal science, political science, economics, and sociology:
Oceans and Climate, Pollution of the Seas, Fisheries, Coastal Zone Processes

Monday: Gerd Winter - Legal Dimensions of Global Change in the Marine Realm
Tuesday: Michael Flitner - Political Dimensions of Global Change in the Marine Realm
Wednesday: Cornelia Ohl - Economic Dimensions of Human Activities in the Marine Realm
Thursday: Ingo Heidbrink - The History of Human Activities in the Marine Realm
Friday: Hellmuth Lange - The Society and the Marine Realm
These topics will be subject of case/document studies as well as of group work. The daily topics are subjects to further planning.
