Leibniz Lection: The state of world fishery and the significance of tropical waters for food supply

Date: 29 June 2017
Website: https://www.leibniz-gemeinschaft.de/ueber-uns/veranstaltungen/urania-reihe/wo...
Place: Urania Berlin, An der Urania 17, 10787 Berlin, GERMANY
Description:

The blue part of our planet is as long as anyone can remember a source of food. With motorisation and expansion of industrial fishing, the annual yields increased at first very much. In the end of the 1980s, they found a certain level of approximately 85 million tons per year.

Assessments on the condition of fishery resources have a range from apocalyptical scenarios of an approaching global collaps as result of overfishing to predictions of increasing earnings because of population recoveries as a result of a better management.

Tropical waters are food supply for over 90% of all small-scale fishers, but outside fishery and loss of productivity caused by climate lead to a growing threat for those resources.

Event starts at half past 7 in the evening.
