![](../../plugins/databaseslayout/img/trans1x1.gif) Technical detailsThe need for coastal information and data has already been emphasized. How is this need tackled so far and what is the new approach of the coastal databases of EUCC - The Coastal Union? Approach 1: individual databases
![Individual Databases](img/Visio-IndividualDatabases-Ansatz.jpg) |
![](/img/trans1x1.gif)
Organisations, projects or networks are developing their own databases, accessing their own database server.
Pro:
- smooth integration into the website
- full control of content
- allows adaptation to special needs
Contra:
- development and maintenance costs
- limited number of available entries due to the limited number of users
- maintenance beyond the duration of a project is often not assured
- data providers have to enter their data into different databases to reach a wide dissemination of information
|
Approach 2: linking to a central database
![Central Database](img/Visio-CentralDatabase-Ansatz.jpg) |
![](/img/trans1x1.gif)
Organisations, projects or networks are linking to a central database
Pro:
- single point of development and maintenance
- large number of users allows a large amount of data and supports dissemination
- single point of entry for data providers
Contra:
- connection to the central database interface by external links, no integration into the own webside
- missing integration leads to a decreased acceptability of users
- adaptation to special needs regarding functionality or content practically impossible
|
Our approach: EUCC Coastal Databases
![EUCC Coastal Databases](img/Visio-EUCC-Ansatz.jpg) |

Options for partners
Partners can decide what types of databases they want to present their users. If you don't need a projects database, you can easily use only conferences and workshops from the set of Coastal Databases. Partner websites have one or more persons, responsible for the selection of the content to be shown: for every partner all entries can individually be made hidden or visible using an intuitive webbased interface.
Technically, there are different solutions for the integration of the EUCC Coastal Databases into other webpages. Have a look on the list of our current parters to get a feeling what is possible. Normally, a specialized layout based on the webside of a new partner is prepared by EUCC - The Coastal Union.
